Baton Rouge Traffic and Commutes

Traffic is the thing locals complain about most and the thing out-of-state buyers underestimate most. If you take one piece of advice from this whole site, take this one: drive your commute, at your hour, before you buy.

The three bottlenecks

  • I-10 through Baton Rouge. The stretch through the city, including the Washington Street and College Drive area, is the region's chronic chokepoint.
  • The Mississippi River bridge. The I-10 bridge is the main crossing, and a single incident on it reshapes everyone's afternoon on both banks.
  • The I-10/I-12 split. Where traffic from Ascension Parish and Livingston Parish converges. This is why the same 20-mile drive varies so much by direction and time.

Roughly what to expect by area

These are general ranges to downtown Baton Rouge and they vary widely with time of day, incidents and weather. Treat them as a starting point to test, not a promise.

Practical advice

  • Shifted hours help enormously here. Leaving at 6:30 instead of 7:30 can change your life.
  • If you work at the plants, ask about shift-change traffic on LA 73 and LA 30 specifically — it's a different pattern than the Baton Rouge commute.
  • School drop-off adds congestion on the parish highways during the school year.
  • Weather matters more than you'd think. Heavy rain slows everything.
